San Francisco Events This Weekend: Things to Do October 19 to 25, 2026
The big San Francisco events this weekend land on Saturday, October 24: the free Leap Sandcastle Classic at Ocean Beach, Undiscovered SF's night market in SoMa, Lit Crawl, and a free jazz set at Yerba Buena Gardens. Earlier in the week, catch a free morning hour at the Japanese Tea Garden and Día de los Muertos NightLife at the Cal Academy, then close out Sunday with SFMOMA's Free Family Day.
Late October is one of our favorite stretches of the year in the city. The fog usually backs off, the light goes golden by late afternoon, and the calendar gets crowded. This week has a little of everything: a beach full of architects building castles, a night market in SoMa, a literary pub crawl, and a couple of free museum and garden windows worth setting an alarm for.
We pulled together the events we would actually go to ourselves, in order by day. Every listing links to its source, so double check details before you head out, since times and RSVP rules can shift.
San Francisco Events This Weekend and All Week: October 19 to 25
Japanese Tea Garden free admission hour
Monday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 21, 9:00 am - 10:00 am (also Fridays) · 9:00–10:00 am · Golden Gate Park · Free during that hour. Otherwise $12–16 for non-residents; SF residents with ID always get in free.
The tea garden at 9 am, before the tour groups arrive, is a completely different place: quiet paths, the drum bridge, mist still hanging in the maples. If you live here, bring your ID and you are in free any time, so this hour is really a gift to visiting friends.
Día de los Muertos "NightLife" at the California Academy of Sciences
Thursday, October 22, 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm · 6:00–10:00 pm · California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park · $26
NightLife is the Academy after dark, and the Day of the Dead theme makes this one of the more atmospheric editions of the year. A Thursday night in the park, with the planetarium and aquarium open, beats most bar plans.
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival: Weekend Sessions with the Afro-Filipino Jazz Project
Saturday October 24, 2026, 2pm - 3:30pm · 2:00–3:30 pm · Great Lawn, Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission St between 3rd and 4th, SoMa/Yerba Buena · Free
The Great Lawn is one of the best-kept outdoor stages downtown, ringed by SFMOMA, the Moscone buildings and the Metreon. This set also pairs nicely with Undiscovered SF a few blocks south later the same day.
44th Annual Leap Sandcastle Classic
Saturday, October 24, 2026 - 11:00 am to 3:30 pm · 11:00 am–3:30 pm · Ocean Beach at Balboa St, Outer Richmond/Ocean Beach · Free
This is Northern California's largest sandcastle contest, with 100+ teams of architects, students and designers building giant sculptures on a "Bay Area Vibes" theme. There is live music, food trucks and kids' activities, and the whole thing raises money for arts education. Bring a layer: Ocean Beach can be bright and windy at the same time.
Lit Crawl 2026
October 24, 2026 · Time and venues on the source listing · Price not listed
Lit Crawl is a 4-hour roaming literature festival with 250+ authors, and it closes out the Litquake festival. Readings spill into bars, bookstores and storefronts, and wandering between them is half the fun. Check the listing for the route and start times.
Undiscovered SF: Golden Hour Night Market
Saturday, October 24, 2026 · 4:00–10:00 pm (21+ afterparty 10 pm–1 am) · Victory Hall, 330 Ritch St, SoMa · Free with RSVP
Undiscovered SF is the city's big Filipino American block party and night market, and it is all ages. Ritch Street is a short alley between Brannan and Townsend, so expect it to feel packed in the best way. RSVP ahead.
Julia Jacklin – North America Tour 2026
Saturday October 24, 2026, 8pm · 8:00 pm · The Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St, Castro · Ticketed (price not listed)
The Australian singer-songwriter in the historic Castro Theatre is a great match: quiet, detailed songs in a room built for paying attention. Seeing a show under that ceiling is reason enough to go.
Protomartyr
October 24, 2026 · Time on the venue calendar · August Hall, 420 Mason St, Union Square/Tenderloin edge · Ticketed (price not listed)
The Detroit post-punk band at a mid-size club like August Hall means you get the volume without the arena distance. A good pick if Saturday calls for something louder.
SFMOMA Free Family Day
Oct 25 · SFMOMA, SoMa · Free for kids 18 and under plus up to 2 adults per child; RSVP required
Seven floors of modern art for free is a strong Sunday plan. The RSVP is required, so book it before the weekend fills up.
How We Would Plan the Weekend
If you are trying to fit the most in on Saturday, here is our route:
- Late morning at Ocean Beach for the sandcastles, while the light is good and the builds are taking shape.
- Hop east on the 31 Balboa or the N Judah toward downtown, then catch the 2 pm jazz set on the Great Lawn.
- Walk south to Ritch Street for the night market as golden hour hits.
- Pick your evening: Lit Crawl for words, the Castro Theatre for songs, or August Hall for noise.
Sunday, SFMOMA is a short walk from where you ended Saturday if you started in SoMa. And if you were looking for Bay Area festivals this weekend more broadly, the Saturday cluster in SoMa and Yerba Buena is about as festival-dense as the city gets in late October.
Around the Neighborhood
Outer Richmond and Ocean Beach
The sandcastle contest is a good excuse to spend a day out by Balboa Street and see what the western edge of the city is really like. The housing stock is mostly 1920s through 1940s single-family homes and flats, with some two- and three-unit buildings and a smaller number of condos and TICs. Balboa and Clement have independent bakeries, cafes and the Balboa Theatre, and Lands End, Sutro Baths and the Golden Gate Park western end are all within a walk.
The tradeoff is weather. This is the fog belt, and summer here is cooler and grayer than the Mission or Potrero. Fall, like this week, is when the west side is at its best. Buyers who love it tend to value space and quiet over a short downtown commute.
SoMa and Yerba Buena
Half of this week's events sit within a few blocks of each other in SoMa, which tells you a lot about the neighborhood. You get museums, Yerba Buena Gardens, Oracle Park, and Caltrain at 4th and King, along with a deep mix of housing: brick-and-timber loft conversions, mid-rise condo buildings from the 2000s, and newer towers with full amenities. We wrote more about that mix in our local's guide to living in SoMa.
SoMa and the nearby South Beach and Yerba Buena corridor were among the hardest-hit condo markets after 2022, and they have been recovering. If you are weighing whether to keep renting downtown or buy, our rent vs. buy breakdown for San Francisco in 2026 walks through how we think about it. For the bigger picture, see what the San Francisco housing market is like in 2026.
Either way, go walk these blocks on a busy Saturday. It is the best way we know to get a real feel for a neighborhood before you ever step into an open house.
